Why a Pre-Made Logo Isn’t Good Enough for Your Business
These days I’m seeing more and more websites offer pre-made logos to businesses looking to get their feet off the ground. Although this can be a good decision in some cases, many times these quick logos turn into long-term branding graphics that can really limit the growth of your business.
Here’s why I think your business deserves way more than a pre-made logo:
1. Pre-made logos aren’t unique, but your business is.
To create a really strong logo, it needs to be built from the core concept behind your business—it should be a reflection of your goals, objectives and target audience, all of which are unique to your business. When you work with a designer, all of this information and brand background shines through during the research process, and helps support your brand message in the creation of a professionally-crafted logo.
2. The quality and flexibility of these logos are not the greatest
Keeping in mind that these types of logos are typically created quickly, and without much extra thought put into them, it’s no surprise that the quality usually suffers as a result. The important details that designers take time to refine and perfect often get overlooked, which means you’re left with an average logo at best. Also, often times when you purchase a pre-made logo you only have access to a single icon without any supporting graphics or visual elements. This makes it super difficult to develop your brand across different platforms, when you’re limited to only one icon.
3. The same pre-made logo is often sold to many businesses
Pre-made logos are usually fairly inexpensive, which means a lot of businesses are attracted to the price tag. The problem with this is that we now have a situation where businesses all around the world are using the same exact graphic to represent their businesses. Not only does it seem unprofessional to potential customers, but it also creates some confusion when you start seeing the same exact logo used for other businesses.
4. Your audience needs more than just a logo to trust you.
In order for your potential customers to trust you and your business, the key is consistency throughout your brand message and aesthetics. A logo is a very small part of this equation, which is why a full branding package and strategy is really the smartest way to kick start a business. During the process you not only leave with a logo, but also a clear understanding of what your business should look and feel like across all platforms, using your newly-created collection of brand graphics and logo variations.
Pre-made logos can be a temporary solution, but should really not be used long-term. If your timeline or budget requires you to go down this path, make a timeline for yourself—decide how long you want to use the graphic before investing in a full brand identity package. This will ensure that you work towards your goal and start saving for this step in your business plan.
At the end of the day no ones cares more about your business than you do, so you should never have to settle when it comes to your brand vision. The first step you can take is investing in a designer that will guide you through the entire branding experience, making you and your business a priority—creating a logo and branding strategy that truly represents your business.
